Magazine Analysis (ASOS Double-Page Spread)

Double-page Spread

  1. Images: A full sized image is used to cover the whole page, the scenery in the background, but the model attracts the readers' eyes first due to the type of poses she is performing in the photos.
  2. Fonts: Same font used for the cover, but extremely larger so the reader is attracted towards it first.
  3. Colours: The colour that can be seen the most is the beautiful blue sky in the background, not only that but the colours of the model's clothes are another viewpoint.
  4. Page Layout: The way they have structured the pictures and the text make sure that both can be read and seen easily. The bold title covers the backdrop, the model's head on the left-hand photo covering a tiny part of the lettering, however, the font style is kept the same for continuity. The brief description of the girl's background is covering the centre of her body on the right-hand photo, with text at the bottom of the page with black text and a white under colour.
  • When turning to the first double-page spread on the cover girl, the first thing that I can see is the headline: 'Girls' World' which is in bold at the top of the pages. The first photograph of the girl is slightly covering the letters, the first text being considerably bigger than the other one, but still rocks the attention of the reader, giving an opening summary about the girl they are about learn about.
  • Secondly, the first photograph gives a close up view of the girl, and the second photo gives a full-body shot of what she is wearing. Underneath that is an opening statement, using three words to describe her: 'Quirky, weird and wonderful'.
  • The poses she is doing in the photographs are out of the ordinary. With the Brooklyn Bridge (photos taken on the Brooklyn waterfront) in the background, the way she is posing gives the effect she is holding it with her hands in position, to which she lives up to her description.

  1. Page Layout: Basic structure, the one photograph of the model is placed on the left-hand page, the minimalist writing on the right-hand page gives it the most of the attention due to the huge 'W' to start the story.
  2. Images: The image of the model is a full length shot, which gets all of her body in the photo, the type of pose to suit the surroundings that she is in, her clothing has changed but very much so matches the colours used on the page opposite.
  3. Fonts/Structure of writing: Font is continuous once again, there are two paragraphs going down to the bottom of the page, with a quote in the bottom left-hand corner, almost like it is floating in the white background so that people are able to read it clearly.
  4. Colours: Black and white, the model is also wearing black and white, the only hint of colour is in the background scenery where the photograph has been taken.
  • On the second double page spread, the girl is in another location, something pretty different to the first, but still looks somewhere not far. The first thing you see is the kicker, the big 'W' to start the world 'walking'. It attracts all the attention of the reader, a way of making them read what they have to say. However, they kept the structure to a minimalistic state due to the fact, just like the contents page, it is Black and White. The photo of the girl doesn't attract attention from the text, but does relate and set the scene to what the reader is going to read, this is called 'negative space'. Two sub-headings are used to sum up the big-block of text in a perfect and basic way.
  • As the pages go on, (four double page spreads), the consistency is balanced between colours and in conclusion, the photographs link well with what is being said and this is why I think that although she is an actress, the way they draw the attention upon the clothes she is wearing gives readers a way of changing their look to match the Indie/Pop vibe she is creating.
