Analysis of Music Magazine (2)

i-D
  • 'i-D' is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture. Founded in 1980.
Cover

  • Note: There are various other covers which make up this 'The Creative Collaborators' Issue:

  1. Masthead: Placed in the top left-hand corner on the cover, font colour used is a dark purple put on a white background, slightly covering the model's face a little, but not significantly.
  2. Coverlines: The theme throughout the four different covers is 'together' and it is placed on the left-hand side of the page. It is important that the colours for each magazine covers have been kept the same throughout, and they have done so by keeping the Masthead and Coverline Purple.
  3. Main Image: Three out of the four covers have at least one main viewpoint (person) on the cover, except for the last example. I think that by only having one model on the cover doesn't confuse the reader that much by too much on the screen at once.
Contents

  1. Images: Minimal photos at all on this 'crowded' contents page, the only photos used are at the bottom of the first page, examples of other covers (full scale above). They take up a quarter of the bottom half of the first page, the rest is text and a White background/Black/Bold text.
  2. Fonts: The font choice is continued from the cover to the contents, the colour this time is Black, only two varieties of font styling (Bold & Standard).
  3. Layout Structure: The layout structure for both pages make the page quite cramped, there's a lot of information to take in, and by separating the two texts (Bold & Standard) together disconnects the subject titles so that it's all not one block of text together.
  4. Colours: Not many colours used, as said, Black and White is prominent, however, there are sections of colour in the photos, but not exactly the viewpoint of the page.

Double-page Spread

  1. Images: Two main-body and head-shot images are used to fill the left-hand page of the second double page and the right-hand page on the first double page spread. I think that this is a main viewing point for the audience due to the fact that when they turn the to see the first page, the model 'winking' and the use of colours in her clothes and make-up draw attention. It also kind-of blurs out the text and draws away the thought from that to the model.
  2. Fonts: The font choice is continued from the cover to the contents, the colour this time is Black, only two varieties of font styling (Bold & Standard).
  3. Colours: Black and White are easily seen, however, in the first and second photos, you can see that they use the colour Red for one piece of text, a way of linking it to the sample of Red in the model's clothing/make-up. There are other colours in the 6 snippet photos on the second double-page spread. The shade of the model's skin blends in with the monochrome themed pages.
  4. Page Layout: The way that they have placed the images and the text on the page is that they have made the model the centre viewpoint and the text the secondary importance. The two link together well because of the colour choices and the text linking with the theme chosen. There is typography surrounding the model, but doesn't distract the attention away from her. I think that this is important for the type of magazine it is due to the fact that the Fashion/Music culture is the theme and that's what the audience want to see.
  • What I liked about both magazines, 'Wonderland. and i-D', is that both are very minimalistic inside, for example, throughout each double-page spread, they leave blank white pages or spaces in/between pages so that it draws the attention on the image. It's either covering the page fully with a little bit of white, or place in the top right or left corner, black text and a white background. I think that I should incorporate this type of ideas into my magazine double-page spread due to the fact that I am trying to creates something unique and special, but simple also. I think that the most important features of the magazine cover and double-page spreads is by drawing the attention onto the clothing style, which is a special aspect with the type of music I am researching.
