Magazine Analysis (ASOS Cover)

  • ASOS, A clothing company that began in 2000, which has now rapidly developed by launching their corporation worldwide, began ASOS magazine 2007. It is a monthly magazine which is sent out to subscribers, predominately female, and attracts under 500k readers each month. For those that are not able to sign up to receive the paper-copy of their magazine, an online hard-copy is available.
  • I decided to do an analysis of their most recent magazine because I think that it will benefit to my chosen genre, Indie/Pop, to which style is the up most importance when creating their image.
Cover

  1. Masthead: Centred at the top of the front cover, the model's head covering most of the lettering but words can still be seen due to the fact that it is a well known brand in the fashion industry. A Green font colour chosen to fit the new year/Christmas issue.
  2. Coverlines: The layout of the text on the page covers most of the model's body, leading the centre empty, this is a clear and easy way to read both text and see the image clearly.
  3. Main Image: The main image features an Actress to which follows inside a double page spread plus interview. She is wearing the relevant clothing to promote their brand.
  • This month features an American actress, to which is currently being put in the public-eye for starring in television show airing on a popular network in America.
  • The girl, mid-twenties, influences the genre I have picked due to the fact she is wearing the typical clothing from an Indie/Pop artist. It looks as though the girl has very good fashion taste and that she may listen to the type of music that I am basing my own magazine on and because it is a fashion magazine connected to a company, it is a brilliant way of attracting the attention of teenagers and young-adults to buy their clothes, just like their 'idols'.
  • I'm not only looking at the way she is dressed, it is the way she is placed on the page. Her head is pressed against which looks like a grey, graffiti stained, brick wall, which means that it was shot outside. Her hair is out of her face, she is smiling broadly and her bright red coloured lip-stick is attracting all the attention first.
  • Looking at the structure of the magazine, the image of the girl is placed over the Masthead, to which this means that readers are clear and recognisable of the magazine name. It looks as though they have used the 'E' template when designing this front cover because their is text from left to right in the centre, covering the girl's body, and at the bottom there is a straight block of text also. A heading is used E.G. 'Girls' Girl!' as the main headline which is connected to the girl on the front cover.
  • Looking at the colour scheme, they have used four different types of colours to match the theme of this month's magazine, which happens to be Christmas/New Year (Black, Green, White and Red). There is a lot of space in between different types of texts so that they all can be read easily.
