Analysis of Music Magazine (1)

  • I am going to analyse some magazines which I think are the best related to my chosen genre of music, with the mix of fashion also.
Wonderland.
  • 'Wonderland' is an international, independently published magazine which offers a unique perspective on the best new talent across all types of culture such as fashion, film, music and art.
Cover

  1. Masthead: Centred at the top of the cover, font colour used is white so that it can be read clearly on the quite dark surrounded background with a mix of basic primary colours: Red, Blue, Yellow and Green. The layout chosen is very basic, but works well because the main focus point is the image, and the text is secondary.
  2. Coverlines: No text is covering the face of the model, the only other text used is at the bottom, underneath the barcode. Month and year of the magazine is on the left of the page, price of the magazine is on the left at the bottom. 'The Fashion Issue' is used as a tagline, a summary of what features are involved in this months' magazine.
  3. Main Image: The main image features a model that is currently in the 'public-eye' for starring in a popular television show in the U.K, which links perfectly to the writing at the bottom of the page: 'TV takes over'. The image is entirely emotive instead of the 'simple photo'. She is standing behind a screen, her face isn't particularly clear due to the raindrops, but gives a glare affect. It looks as though filter-lights are used in the background to highlight the model's face.
  • Also looking at the structure of the magazine, the masthead is placed over the model's forehead, but the face can still be easily seen. The colour used for the title is very clear, in fact, compliments the background colours well.
Contents

  1. Images: There are minimal photos across the two contents pages, a lot of white space, the only two photos are placed in the top right-hand corner and the bottom right-hand corner, then text is used to fill the remaining space, but only the essential information needed. The photos used
  2. Fonts: The font choice is continued from the cover to the contents, the colour this time is Black, only two varieties of font styling (Bold & Standard).
  3. Layout Structure: Although the page is very spacious, the layout does work when trying to attract the attention of the reader.
  4. Colours: Not many colours used, as said, Black and White is prominent, however, there are sections of colour in the photos, but not exactly the viewpoint of the page.
Double-page Spread

  1. Images: There are many double-page spreads connecting to the front cover, all in the same theme, I think that this is a key feature in keeping a sense of continuity throughout the magazine, making it look more professional and well thought-out.
  2. Fonts: Continuous font throughout, the colour this time is Black, only two varieties of font styling (Bold & Standard).
  3. Layout Structure: The photographs are spread out in comparison with the text, for example, in the photo below the main model shots are put at the top and the text at the bottom, a layout quite simple but effective, a way of making the audience look at the photos first, then read the text second. For most of the other pages, one double page spread only includes shots of the model.
  4. Colours: For this article/interview they have kept a Black and White theme in the text and background, and used colours such as Purple, Red, Orange and Blue, similar at least to the photo of the model on the cover. Although these colours are normally brighter and happier than how they have used them in the photos, I still think that it makes the mood and atmosphere of the photos more serious, which is what the theme of the shoot was, and taking into account the model's face expressions.
